In the early 1900s, Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud founded a revolutionary theory called psychoanalysis, which was related to the study of the unconscious mind. As his work progressed, a number of followers were invited to meet in Freud's apartment every Wednesday afternoon to discuss various ideas about psychology and the meaning of dreams. This group was called the Wednesday Psychological Society and marked the beginning of the worldwide psychoanalytic movement.
In Unconscious Mind, a game that mixes worker placement, engine-building, action programming, and multiple washers, as a member of this society, your goal is to master therapeutic techniques, establish a practice, and grow your clientele. By delving into your clients' dreams, their unconscious minds, you can help them achieve catharsis and recover from their traumas and layers of pain. As a result, the people you treat will be able to live happier and more productive lives. Additionally, you can document your findings by publishing papers that can then be cited by other researchers, in order to grow your reputation as a scholar.
During your turn, you place bubble-shaped “ideas” to access different action spaces on the game board. Then, depending on the row you choose, you advance the inkwell on the rondel of your player board a certain number of steps, activating the effects of all the Technique tiles in the chosen row. In addition to the meeting table, there is a second board showing the center of Vienna, on which you can visit the most important historical sites with your professor, sometimes meeting Freud himself, to get bonus actions (or a potent cup of coffee). Once you have collected enough insights (the main resources of the game), you can use them to interpret your clients’ dreams. By moving from the surface “manifest” dreams to the deeper “latent” ones, you can help your clients to dissipate their layers of pain (represented by lifting transparent cards) and ultimately solve their problems for good, unlocking rule-altering abilities and final scoring opportunities. The game has many interconnected systems, which flow into each other, making each turn produce cascading and chain effects.
