From a small gathering in Seneca Falls, New York, to the ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Women's Suffrage Movement waged a seven-decade battle to secure the most basic right of citizenship for half of the American population. While the 19th Amendment by no means guaranteed all women the right to vote, it is a testament to the power of movements and the brilliant determination of their members. The story of how suffragists won the vote for women has never been more relevant, given the resurgence of movement politics today.
Votes for Women celebrates the struggle by inviting players to join the suffrage movement, organize support, and campaign for victory in the 48 states that ratified the 19th Amendment in 1919-1920. The game can be played cooperatively, competitively, or solo, and in each version players must navigate the historical events, movement schisms, and political challenges of the era to win.
The board is simple to set up and the graphics are inspired by classic designs used by the suffragettes themselves.
The deck of over 100 beautiful cards features period art, portraits, and historical documents, and includes instructions for events that will unfold during the game. Initiators move around the map to distribute political capital with a roll of the dice, which will determine whether each state will vote to ratify the amendment or oppose the vote after three epochs of play.
Dig deeper into history and navigate the critical choices suffragettes had to face to have a chance to secure equal rights for all and win the vote for women!
