Weirdwood Manor is a cooperative board game that combines fantastic adventure gameplay with some Euro-inspired underpinnings, as you and your band of valiant companions fight to protect Weirdwood Manor and its enigmatic ruler, Lady Weirdwood, from an invading faerie monster and her mechanical Scarab minions.
The Manor is a mysterious and magical place where rooms and the paths between them can change over time. The game features a unique time mechanic; each time a player or the Fairy Monster performs an action, time will advance in the game and the connections between rooms will move via unique rotating corridor rings on the board. Players have some freedom in how they use their actions to influence how quickly (or slowly) time passes, but beware, if players run out of time and have not defeated the monster, they lose!
You take on the role of one of six asymmetrically designed characters as you battle one of three different Fae Monsters, each with their own unique mechanics and loss conditions. You'll utilize dice rolling, card play, resource management, and tracking actions as you move through the ever-changing manor in pursuit of the Fae Monster and its minions. You can also recruit additional companions to aid you, and you'll improve your character's abilities as you gain experience.
Each turn, players will use their deck of cards to perform a primary action. The rooms they move through may offer additional actions and benefits. Additionally, players can use their unique player and companion powers. These combinations can create varied and potentially powerful action chains on a player's turn.
However, after each player's turn, the Fae Monster will act, using its own custom deck of cards. As the game progresses, the Fae Monster's strength will increase, and things will become more dire for the players, who will have to work together to solve the challenges that face them. The game offers deep tactical choice and a degree of unpredictability that will make the traditional leader quarterbacking nearly impossible; players will really have to strategize as a team to succeed as the threat grows!
And so, if players manage to defeat the Fae Monster before time runs out – or before the Fae Monster completes its unique victory condition, players will win the game and keep Weirdwood Manor safe for now… until the next threat arrives. !
