20 Strong is an acclaimed game system based on dice rolling, strategic decisions and resource management. Playable in 30-60 minutes, a game of 20 Strong puts you in the shoes of a hero with unique powers who uses his 20 dice to overcome a series of obstacles presented by a deck of cards.
Different colored dice have different odds of success, and you must roll and apply your dice carefully during each round of play. After a fight, you will regain some of your dice, but only as many as your Recovery stat allows. If you can get through the deck and face the final challenge without your health dropping to 0, you win the game!
In this new deck, the focus of all three decks is the exploration of Tanglewoods, an unpredictable forest filled with enemies, tales, and other challenges that will try to ensnare you as you try to reach the other side and take down your final enemy. Each individual Tanglewoods deck features woods and the unique way you can traverse them.
Each deck features a host of fantastical creatures that will challenge you in a variety of unique ways, alone or in tandem. Be warned: these foes are even more challenging at night, and each Tanglewoods deck has its own way of surprising you when it gets dark.
In addition to enemies, each deck also boasts a variety of fables, which are event cards with powerful effects. Sometimes the effects are good, sometimes they are downright vile. It's up to you to decide when it's worth changing their revolutionary nature.
Another unique aspect of the Tanglewoods series is the gold bag given to the player, which is measured by the tracker chip. Most enemies in the decks can be bought with your precious gold, but while it may be tempting to avoid a tough fight, you can't do that forever. After all, enemies are also the only way to get gold, so if you want the cold hard cash to avoid fights and level up your character at the market, you'll have to be judicious in deciding who you pay and who you fight.
When you’re not spending your gold on bribing the forest’s denizens, you can also take it to the friendly, mysterious, and strangely familiar merchant who roams the woods in all three decks. This merchant offers a variety of services at his traveling stall, including dice retrieval, reconnaissance, and healing.
The most appealing aspect, however, is its range of items. Purchasing equipment from the merchant is the only way to get single-use or ongoing rewards in Tanglewoods decks, and you can pay an additional fee to upgrade your loot, flipping the card to its most powerful side.
The 20 Strong system can be applied to multiple decks, each with its own unique and challenging mechanics. With each deck boasting its own little brain-burning ruleset and a variety of specialized heroes and items to aid you on your journey, 20 Strong is a system built for replayability.
In Tanglewoods: Red, based on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, you must travel through the Tanglewoods while avoiding the Big Bad Wolf pack. The deck features a unique map mechanic, inspired by the hit card and video game Slay the Spire! Make smart choices when choosing your route and be careful not to travel too far into the night, where stronger monsters await at every stop!
Tanglewoods: Gold centers on the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, and you must defeat all three furry beasts on your path to victory. You must navigate a deck of map cards, matching the directions of your chosen one with a series of fairy tale and enemy cards that leave you with an active danger area. Watch out for special Ambush cards, which can surprise you and launch additional effects and enemies at you. Speed is key: the more times you clear the deck, the more night cards will appear to threaten your path!
Tanglewoods: Gold takes the classic 20 Strong formula of risk, strategy, and push-your-luck and cranks it up to the max, creating an engaging game that will have you questioning your card draws and dice pools. Tanglewoods: White takes the classic Snow White story and pits the hero and his dwarf companions against an evil Stepmother who has stranded them in the dangerous forest! You’ll move your character through a woodland grid that shifts and changes with every step you take. Directional positioning and the order in which you defeat enemies are of paramount importance, as they affect the lethal modifiers you must bring into battle and even the arsenal of boss enemies you’ll face in the finale. In Tanglewoods: White, you’ll always have to think ahead, whether that’s taking your next step or journeying to the gates of your Stepmother’s castle!
