Thorgal: The Board Game is a cooperative adventure game for 1-4 players, created by Joanna Kijanka, Jan Maurycy and Rafał Szyma. Players take on the roles of Thorgal, his wife Aaricia, their son Jolan and Kriss, a deadly warrior, and embark on a series of adventures.
Thorgal comes with a mapbook. Each scenario is played on a different map, which players explore as they complete the scenario’s objectives, and promises completely different adventures, hidden opportunities, and colorful characters. Players are free to choose whether to travel in a single group or split up to cover multiple areas at once. They can also take on side quests that may help them win a scenario.
Another important feature of the game is the storybook that contains narrative descriptions of the encounters that the characters have in each scenario. The adventures described in the book are specific to each scenario and character, but many of them are randomized within a scenario, offering greater replayability and allowing for multiple playthroughs. There are also subplots that players can follow to gain advantages and reveal additional parts of the story.
Thorgal: The Board Game, while having a strong narrative element, offers a new and unique action selection mechanism, where actions have a variable power depending on what other actions have already been taken. Players carefully plan their strategy and the sequence of actions taken, considering that this directly affects the strength of the effect of each action. This creates an interesting decision space and makes each turn important for everyone at the table.
Another important mechanic is character development. Each character gains experience throughout the game and advances their skills. This dynamic progression allows players to make meaningful decisions about how to develop their hero in the game. Characters gather resources and craft items that help them survive in a dangerous world.
The game consists of 7 independent scenarios, each of which requires approximately 90-120 minutes of play. The scenarios do not form a campaign or have legacy features, so they can be played by different gaming groups and over an extended period of time.
