For generations, the rats of the old landfill have been telling each other the great legend of a moon made of cheese and want nothing more than to reach this inexhaustible treasure. One day, the little rats discovered a comic book in the landfill describing the first moon landing, and so the plan was born: build a rocket and conquer the cheese moon! Fortunately, the landfill has everything the rats need to build their rocket and the other animals are willing to support this daring undertaking, at least if they are well paid. Of course, all the rats work together to achieve this difficult goal.
However, each mouse family competes to build the most rocket parts and train the most rats so they can feast on as much moon cheese as possible. In First Rat, each player starts with two mice and can recruit two more. On your turn, move one of your mice 1-5 spaces along the path or move 2-4 of your mice 1-3 spaces each as long as they land on spaces of the same color. Your mice can never share the same space, and if you land on a space with another player's mouse, you must pay them one cheese. After moving, collect resources (cheese, tin cans, apple cores, baking soda, etc.) that match the space you occupy or move the light bulb along the light string, which will increase your income on future turns. If you stop moving near a shop, you can spend resources to buy a backpack or bottle cap, or you can steal an item instead, with the mouse then returning to the start of the movement path. You can also spend resources to build rocket sections (and score points) or spend the cheese in bulk as a donation (and score points). When you collect apple cores, you move around the mouse hole to collect comics or preserved food, or raise one of your mice from the nursery. Alternatively, you automatically get a new mouse when one of your mice reaches the launch pad and boards the spaceship. When a player places their fourth mouse on the spaceship, or places their eighth score marker on the board, the game ends and the player with the most points wins.
