Two hundred years after his death in exile on the island of St. Helena, Napoleon Bonaparte remains a fascinating and controversial figure. More books have been written about Napoleon than any other historical figure apart from Jesus, and the debate over his life and legacy continues to rage: Savior of the Revolution or its destroyer? Lawgiver or tyrant? Great captain or foolish gambler? Symbol of the Romantic Age or the greatest product of the Age of Reason? Wherever one lands in these discussions, Napoleon packed enough events into his relatively short life (1769-1821) for a dozen lifetimes. It is a tale on an epic scale of the son of a minor Corsican nobility who rises to the heights of power before losing everything. It is the stuff games are made of.
I, Napoleon is a historical solitaire game where you put yourself in the shoes of Captain Buonoparte (as he still was) in the year 1793. Louis XVI has just been guillotined, the Robespierre brothers control the fate of France, and all of Europe has joined forces with the French royalists to overthrow France, end the Revolution, and restore peace and security to the crown princes who have upheld society for 1,000 years.
As an ambitious but unknown young artillery officer, speaking French with a Corsican accent, you seem like an unlikely agent of destiny. Can you harness your brilliant mind, titanic energy, and sometimes terrifying charisma to make your mark on history? Or will you die as a minor footnote in the history of France?
GAMEPLAY In I, Napoleon, your destiny is contained in 220 beautifully illustrated cards, divided into three decks: Commander, First Consul and Emperor. A series of Card Boxes overlaid on a map of Europe in the early 19th century, where you can relive the events of your life and career, along with various tracks and tables to record the passage of time annually and the events that affect you and France. The choices you make with the cards you are dealt will determine your success or failure. You will have to manage politics, military campaigns, diplomacy and the internal well-being of the French, while pursuing the Glory that attracts you. You will also have to manage your family, your wives, your lovers and your children, legitimate and otherwise.
Your path may take you from the Americas to the Near East, from Spain to Russia, from a throne to exile. You will be the target of assassinations, coups, and coalitions. You will face crop failures and plagues, confront Wellington and Nelson, Kutuzov and Blucher. You will rely on, and perhaps be betrayed by, the elusive Talleyrand, and unleash the Fouché secret police against your opponents. As you progress, your options will increase, along with the stakes.
Lead your men into battle and risk an untimely end to your life? Sail to Egypt or Ireland? Sell Louisiana or send an army to hold it? Marry a Habsburg or a Romanov? Create the Duchy of Warsaw or revive the Kingdom of Poland? Invade Russia or try to pacify the Tsar? Every choice you make will shape your legacy.
But there is not one version of life here, but many. Each game will provide a different narrative, based both on the luck of the draw and the decisions you make. Additionally, you can start the game as a Commander, First Consul, or Emperor, each with their own starting situation and challenges. The story is yours to discover, and the decisions you make could change the course of history.
