Pax Porfiriana – Latin for “Porfirian Peace” – refers to the 33-year reign of dictator Porfirio Díaz, who ruled Mexico with an iron fist until his overthrow in the 1910 Revolution.
As a wealthy businessman (Hacendado) in the turbulent pre-revolutionary borderlands of the United States and Mexico, players compete to build business empires of ranches, mines, railroads, troops, and banks, subverting their opponents with bandidos, Native Americans, and lawsuits. Each round plays out as follows:
There are four "score" cards (Toppling) in the game and their effect depends on the current form of government. The government can change if troops are played and as a result of other cards. The form of government also affects several production values in the game, such as the amount produced by mines. Players win by overthrowing Díaz, through a coup, succession, revolution, or the annexation of Mexico by the United States. If Díaz remains firmly in office at the end of the game, the player with the most gold wins.
The Ultimate Edition includes a brand new set of Era II cards that extend the gameplay into the aftermath of the original events.
